This seminar considers the impacts of the global financial crisis on international migration, focusing on Southeast Asia. First, it demonstrates how a reduction in remittances, the return of labour migrants, and fewer overseas placements for new migrant workers are all impacting unemployment and poverty levels in Southeast Asia, compounding the effects of rising food and fuel prices. Second, it considers the extent to which this in turn may result in more irregular migration within and from the region. Third, it considers implications for Australian domestic and foreign policy.
Dr Khalid Koser is Director of the New Threats and Human Security Programme at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy, and is currently assessing the impacts of the global financial crisis on international migration for ILO, IOM and UNHCR.
