Master of Diplomatic Studies

The Master of Diplomatic Studies is designed for students who have already completed a Master's degree with a distinction average within the last ten years in one of the following areas and who wish to study the theory and practice of diplomacy at the Masters level:-

  • International Affairs
  • Strategic Affairs
  • Middle Eastern & Central Asian Studies
  • Asia-Pacific Studies
  • Law/International Law
  • Public Policy
  • Diplomacy
  • Business
  • Another discipline in a subject area relevant to diplomacy

Master of Diplomacy Combined Degree Program

 

Master of Diplomacy degree

The Master of Diplomacy degree is designed for applicants who have completed, at distinction average, the coursework requirements for the award of an ANU degree of Master in an area in which an awareness of contemporary diplomacy would be advantageous. (This is referred to as your 'Field of Study' Master degree.) The Master of Diplomacy is offered only as part of a combined degree program; it is not available as a single degree.

(18 months duration: coursework only)
Master of Diplomacy/Master of Arts (International Relations)
(24 months duration: coursework and research thesis)
Master of Diplomacy/Master of Strategic Affairs
(18 months duration: coursework only)
Master of Diplomacy/Master of Arts (Strategic Studies)
(24 months duration: coursework and research thesis)
Master of Diplomacy/Master of International Law
(18 months duration: coursework only)
Master of Diplomacy/Master of Laws specialising in International Law
(18 months duration: coursework only)
Master of Diplomacy/Master of Asia-Pacific Studies

A student undertaking a combined degree program will be awarded both degrees at a single ceremony following the successful completion of all the requirements for both degrees.

Program Format

Students first undertake the coursework of their Field of Study Master degree. The Master of Diplomacy coursework then follows, beginning in December and concluding at the end of the following first semester in June. Students whose Field of Study Master degree includes coursework only will then have completed their combined degree program, forming a total program duration of 18 months.

Students whose Field of Study Master Degree includes a research thesis then proceed with undertaking this research which should be completed by the end of the second year, making their combined degree program a total of 24 months duration.
